the bow, the cord, and the arrows

abelara
“As unto the bow the cord is,
So unto the man is woman,
Though she bends him, she obeys him,
Though she draws him, yet she follows,
Useless each without the other!”

we recently heard the beauty of the opening stanza of this poem during one of the sessions at our Weekend to Remember Marriage Getaway (www.FamilyLife.com/weekend).

it’s a beautiful picture of oneness that God designed for marriage to be; a picture of tension yet harmony. it’s a beautiful picture of how marriage should be. but the serendipitous moment for me came when I realized this picture in the light of the following verses:
3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
the fruit of the womb, a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one’s youth.
5 Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

God’s perfect plans for your kids are best lived out when you and your spouse are in perfect harmony.

the bow, the cord, and the arrows have a purpose and they work together beautifully when used properly. I agree with Hiawatha, “Useless each without the other!”

oops

a little site maintenance…

i wanna apologize to any of you that have recently tried to contact us using the contact link at the top of the page. i just realized that the plugin that i use to manage this changed the default email address to “you@example.com” the last time the plugin was updated. so unfortunately, we haven’t received any contact requests in who knows how long and we have no way of retrieving them.

really, we haven’t been purposefully ignoring you.

here’s a cute picture of us to make you feel better :)  (click to enlarge)

you can call me…

abelara
i’m somewhat particular about my name.  particularly when my name is written.  here’s the rules of my name:

• you can call me Abraham or abe. (notice that when shortened to abe, i prefer the A to be lowercase)

• growing up my sisters started calling me aber or Aber (they never wrote it so i’m not sure if i like it upper or lowercase).  while this feels very natural coming from my sisters, if feels/sounds VERY weird coming from anyone else, no matter how long you’ve known me. my wife doesn’t even call me aber.

• also when used with my wife’s name i prefer that both of our names be long as in Abraham and Deborah, or both to be shortened as in abe and deb. we’re just kinda weird like that, it looks strange to us to see either Abe and Deborah, or Abraham and Deb.

• Deborah isn’t as particular as to whether her first initial is upper or lowercase when using Deb/deb.  Although she always initially introduces herself as Deborah, and only after people get to know her do they start calling her deb. she’s mentioned that after she returned from the year she was in the internship at TeenMania, it was weird to hear all my friends who hadn’t met her refer to her as Deb because that’s what i had been calling her. but she also prefers to have either both names long, or both names shortened when used together.

• we do sometimes refer to ourselves as deboraham (only when speaking, not in writing). we’ve heard others refer to us that way, but not when speaking to us directly. and it may be cute the first time or two if you were to start referring to us that way directly, but we’d probably soon tire of it.

anyways, i just thought you’d like to know a little bit more into the quirkiness that makes up the Laras. :)

hard work = big reward!

our niece has definitely worked hard for the money to get this. she’s watched all 6 of our kids several times by herself while we were out on appointments.

congratulations Cathy on your new iPod Touch!

in search of Solomon

abelara
the Bible says that Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived. and that he astounded people with the decisions he made with his great wisdom (see 1 Kings 3 for full details).

but i’d have to think that even Solomon would be stumped as to how to advise the couple in the story below.  i found this story when reading through the FML app on my iPhone. (if you don’t know what FML means, google it)

Today, I found out why my husband had wanted to wait until marriage to get it on. Last night was the first night of our honeymoon, and he informed me that he wasn’t always Ben, but used to be Brenda. His ‘penis’ doesn’t work and he had wanted to know I “truly loved him” before he had let me know. FML

i’m stumped as to how i would counsel this couple if they came to me. as much as deb and i believe in reconciling marriages and that divorce sucks, i have to wonder would this be an exception? maybe an annulment?

what would you say?

graham crackers and frosting

Recording a video seems to be easier for me than sitting down and eloquently typing my thoughts; it is quicker, too. So, here is my first installment of “Wednesday’s Wisdom for Parents.” Have a great day!

the format

abelara
it seems that anytime we go out in public with all our kids someone will inevitably ask us when we’re gonna get our own tv show.  we don’t mind, we actually like the attention a little.  and it’s fun to be able to show people that you can have a family larger than 2.2 kids and not be at each others throats or pulling our hair out.  so with that in mind we’ve decided to give the site a little more attention.

if you saw deb’s devotional video yesterday you heard her mention during the end that we were giving this site a little more attention and we would both be contributing more often.  we’ve even set up a schedule and themes for us to post on.

so here it is:
Mon:: devos with deb (devotional insights from a mom/wife/princess)
Tues:: married life (thoughts on marriage from a guy/dad/husband/pastor)
Wed:: parenting life (hints/tips/encouragement on parenting from a mom of SIX kids)
Thur:: FamilyLife Update (all the news/updates on our progress to moving to Little Rock by abe)
Fri:: house to home (recipes, family fun activities, cleaning/organizing tips by deb)
Sat:: pic/video of the week (a look into the lives of the laras chosen by abe)
Sun:: theacousticlife.com podcast (every 1st & 3rd sunday we’ll have a new episode posted)

if you have any questions or comments or specific topics you’d like us to discuss, send us an email: feedback@theacousticlife.com.
we hope this site will encourage you (and sometimes challenge you) to become a better family, have a stronger marriage, and get to know us a little better (even though we don’t have our own tv show).
